The Sierra runs 400 miles north-to-south, and is approximately 70 miles across east-to-west. Notable Sierra features include Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America; Mount Whitney at 14,505 ft, the highest point in the contiguous United States; and Yosemite Valley. The Sierra is home to three national parks, twenty wilderness areas, and two national monuments. These areas include Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks; and Devils Postpile National Monument.

Naturalist John Muir described the excitement of being in the Sierra Nevada saying, “We are now in the mountains and they are in us kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us.” Muir called the mountains, “The grandest of all special temples of Nature.” The Sierra Nevada calendar reveals the remarkable landscape that continues to inspire us today.
